Minimum depth: 25 meters.

If there is one dive that stands out above the others, that is, undoubtedly, the Don Pedro wreck. With a maximum depth of 47 meters, it seduces lovers of both sunken ships and depths. Up to date, it is the largest wreck in Europe, and one of the main attractions for divers who come to the Balearic Islands. But, why is the Don Pedro so enigmatic? What happened to a freighter of 143 meters in length to make it sink a mile away from the Port of Ibiza?

It was 2:30 am in July 11, 2007 when the Don Pedro, owned by the Iscomar shipping company, started sailing from the Port of Ibiza towards the Port of Denia, but it would never arrive. A few minutes after departure, a loud bang on the hull was heard. The alarms set on. The crew realized then that the ship crashed onto the upper part of an underwater pinnacle belonging to the islet known as El Dado. A large hole acting as a waterway was opened on the port side of the hull and there was nothing left to do; the boat was sinking. The twenty workers of the company that where on board were rescued during the dawn while the Don Pedro was quickly swallowed by the sea in front of the coast of Ibiza. Here begins the other story of the Don Pedro.

The entire ship is silently resting on a sandy bottom at 47 meters deep on its port side. Despite some initiatives to re-float it, the options ended up being discarded for being complicated and expensive. The veto that prohibited diving there was removed months later when the works to decontaminate and seal the wreck’s access points ended, becoming a great attraction for divers of all over the world.

The wreck is just 5 minutes navigation from Ibiza, while it is about 25 minutes North from Formentera. The wreck offers up to 5 different dives, although the most common ones are at the bow anchors and at the stern deck bridge, perhaps the most interesting parts initially to be able to orientate and appreciate it in all its magnitude. Once acquired the necessary experience and knowledge, we can arrange a couple of dives inside where to admire the cargo trucks and freight, and even a dive in the sand to observe the rarest inhabitants like the small-spotted catsharks that live in the surroundings.
